The bright yellow shirts weren’t the only reason the Creighton University Medical Center (CUMC) team stood out during the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, held Saturday on the downtown campus of ConAgra Foods.

In addition to CUMC CEO Linda Ollis serving as this year’s co-chair, CUMC picked up several honors, including the top health care team and winner of the t-shirt design contest. Additionally, Carol McCormick, CUMC Associate Administrator, was honored as one of two recipients of the Lifestyle Change Award, given to individuals who have made positive changes to improve their quality of life and health.

According to Pat Ray, Service Line Administrator and CUMC team captain, CUMC has raised more than $30,000 for the walk, with more donations to be expected thanks to additional activities taking place in the coming weeks. The donation total makes this CUMC’s most successful fundraising effort ever for the walk.

“As I looked out on the sea of yellow shirts from the main stage, I was so proud of all of our team members,” said Linda. “It was an amazing show of support for such a great cause.”

As co-chair, Linda helped kick the festivities off alongside her co-chair, Gary Rodkin, CEO of ConAgra. In addition to welcoming those in attendance, she also announced CUMC as this year’s Red Cap Sponsor. As the Red Cap Sponsor, CUMC joined the American Heart Association to honor individuals who have survived a stroke or heart attack or who have had heart surgery. All survivors received a special red cap that designates them as a survivor, and were invited to the front of the stage as the audience applauded. Later, Linda called for a moment of silence as those who had lost the battle with cardiovascular disease were remembered.

Also as part of being the Red Cap Sponsor, CUMC hosted a special breakfast for survivors and their families prior to the event, as well as handed out freebies and important health information about vascular disease and heart attack risks to all who visited the CUMC sponsor tent.
