Creighton University Medical Center Presents the Omaha Farmer’s Market

May 24, 2007

The Omaha Farmer

Creighton University Medical Center, together with Creighton Medical Associates, are proud to be presenting sponsors of the Omaha Farmers Market.

The Omaha Farmers Market, now in its fourteenth season is now open from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Historic Old Market District at 11th and Jackson Streets, downtown Omaha. The popular market features more than 90 vendors offering a selection of unique products each Saturday morning through October 13.

“Creighton University Medical Center is excited about this partnership. We have the opportunity to not only support local growers and producers, but to also contribute to the efforts of our downtown neighbors,” commented Linda Ollis, Creighton University Medical Center chief executive officer.

“As the longest-standing hospital in Omaha, Creighton University Medical Center’s rich history was built in the heart of the city, where its commitment continues today,” she said.

Each week, nearly 4,000 shoppers are attracted to the market for its abundant array of locally-produced items including vegetables, fruits, herbs, bedding plants, fresh cut flowers, baked goods, jams and jellies, coffees, honey, barbeque sauces, organic foods, ethnic foods and much more. By purchasing directly from the grower or the producer, shoppers have the opportunity to request expert advice regarding nutrition, preparation and planting recommendations.

As presenting sponsors, Creighton University Medical Center and Creighton Medical Associates will have an on-site presence at the market, handing out important health-related information, conducting screenings and inviting the public to speak one-on-one with a Creighton physician.

For the second year, the Upstream Brewing Company will offer a breakfast menu on Saturdays from 8:30 until 11 a.m.

Additional Old Market coffee shop and restaurant options include:
• 13th Street Coffee (opens at 8:00 a.m.)

The Omaha Farmers Market evolved from a rich tradition that dates back nearly one hundred years. From the turn of the century until 1964, the corner of 11th and Jackson Streets was the site of a very popular farmers’ market known as the “City Market.” Local residents and grocers visited the market daily to buy their produce and supplies. The market was revived in 1994 by then Omaha Mayor P.J. Morgan and has become one of Omaha’s best loved traditions.

Stop by the Omaha Farmer's Market this Saturday to stock up on healthy fruits and vegetables and to receive some important health information.
