Here are some suggestions from the Bariatric Surgery Program Team on what you can do to get started now!
Research
Start looking on the web for any additional information that you can find regarding surgery. Become as knowledgeable as possible so that you are clear on what you are getting yourself in to. See the enclosed reference for websites. If you do not have access to the internet, contact your local library to see if they can assist you in searching for some information. Most local libraries have internet access.
GET IN SHAPE
Although we know that it can be difficult to exercise, do the best you can. Any type of aerobic exercise is beneficial even if it doesn’t result in great weight loss. Getting your lungs in shape for a speedy recovery will help you in the long run.
For Example:
- Walk, Walk, Walk! This is a great form of exercise.
- Swim, or walk in a pool.
- Chair exercises. Such as; leg and arm lifts. Repetitive muscle tightening also burns calories.
Dietary Changes
Start making changes in your diet. If you can start a routine of making healthy food choices and get used to smaller portions, the adjustments won’t seem so drastic AFTER surgery. Also consider taking a high quality multi-vitamin daily if you do not already do so.
