An exciting recent finding in breast cancer research, which has become a reality in patient care, is the examination of the genes active in a patient’s cancer at the time of biopsy. Breast Cancer specialists can tell who may or may not benefit from the use of chemotherapy or hormone therapy. We have learned that the majority of post-menopausal women with negative lymph nodes and hormone sensitive tumors may not benefit from chemotherapy. These women may be treated with hormone blockers with minimal side effects compared to chemotherapy. This information is now garnished from a sophisticated genetic test performed routinely at the Center for Breast Care.
