The physicians and staff of the Esophageal Center perform a variety of procedures for the treatment of gastroesophageal disorders and esophageal cancer. These include:
Enteryx® – A new treatment option that offers an alternative to the daily need for medication. This outpatient procedure involves injecting a biocompatible polymer into the lower esophageal sphincter during an endoscopic procedure.
Endoluminal Gastroplasty - An outpatient procedure performed through the mouth using an endoscope where tucks are made within the lower esophageal sphincter to create a tighter valve. Our program physicians played a key role in helping develop and refine this procedure.
Stretta Procedure - A minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that uses intraluminal administration of radiofrequency for the correction of gastroesophageal reflux disease. The procedure is performed by placing a catheter through the mouth to the gastroesophageal junction where controlled levels of radiofrequency energy are delivered. When the lesions heal, the tissue becomes thicker and stronger, improving the barrier function of the gastroesophageal junction and may reduce the frequency and severity of reflux.
NDO Plication – This outpatient procedure secures a deep reinforced tightening suture at the lower esophageal sphincter. Patients may have fewer side effects. The plication is a good alternative to surgery for some patients that are elderly or uncomfortable with the surgical option.
Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication - A minimally invasive procedure with an 86-96 percent patient satisfaction success rate that recreates an anti-reflux barrier separating the esophagus from the stomach.
Laparoscopic Redo Fundoplication - A reoperative procedure for unsuccessful anti-reflux surgery, which occurs in approximately 10 percent of cases.
Heller Myotomy - A procedure performed with a laparoscope aided by the da Vinci robotic system for patients suffering from achalasia (a condition that causes difficulty with swallowing). During the procedure, the lower esophageal sphincter is divided to help eliminate swallowing problems.
Esophagectomy – A highly complex procedure used to treat esophageal cancer that can be performed using both open and laparoscopic operations.
