Dr. Sumeet Mittal 
Sumeet Mittal, M.D.
Director, Esophageal Center, Assistant Professor of Surgery

Dr. Mittal received his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi, India, and completed a clinical esophageal fellowship at the University of Southern California. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgeons and is certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Mittal’s interests include benign and malignant disease of the esophagus and stomach, minimally invasive surgery, intensive care of post-operative patients, and transoral surgery for reflux disease.

Dr. Chales Filipi 
Charles J. Filipi, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Professor of Surgery

He received his Doctorate of Medicine at Iowa University School of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa, followed by an Internship of Mixed Medicine that was completed at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California. He completed his General Surgical Residency at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr. Filipi is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of numerous surgical societies. Dr. Filipi’s clinical interest include laparoscopic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux, reoperative surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, peptic ulcer disease, intraluminal surgery for upper GI bleeding, removal of early and gastric cancers. He also performs thoracic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux and recently has helped develop a transoral endoscopic procedure for the same disorder. His primary research interest is esophageal disease.Education and training: Iowa University School of Medicine, Iowa City, IA; George Washington University Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Special interests/expertise: Laparoscopic, reoperative and thoracic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease; laparoscopic surgery for achalasia and peptic ulcer disease; intraluminal surgery for Gastroesophageal; and reflux diseases.
