What is Hand Therapy?
Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper quarter of the human body. Hand therapy combines comprehensive knowledge of the upper extremity, its anatomy, function, and activity. Using specialized skills in assessment and treatment, hand therapists promote the goals of prevention of dysfunction, restoration of function, and/or reversal of the progression of pathology in order to enhance participation in life situations for individuals with upper extremity disease or injury (HTCC, 2002).
Who are Certified Hand Therapists?
Creighton University Medical Center employs several certified hand therapists, or CHTs, who are registered and licensed occupational therapists. CHTs receive advanced continuing education and through clinical experience and independent study have demonstrated proficiency in the treatment of upper extremity trauma, diseases, or injuries. Certified hand therapists must have at least five years of clinical experience, including a minimum of 2,000 hours in direct practice in hand therapy. In addition, certified hand therapists must pass an examination, testing advanced clinical skills and theory (HTCC, 2002). They must then uphold rigorous standards for continuing competency through periodic recertification.
