(Omaha, Neb. – Feb. 23, 2011) – Creighton University Medical Center is pleased to announce the Center for Blood Conservation recently received notification of reaccreditation by the Association for Blood Conservation. Accreditation has been extended for three years which is the maximum accreditation.
The accreditation process provides assessment of blood conservation programs like the one at Creighton University Medical Center. ABC’s focus on patient options in healthcare delivery has sought to meet these requirements by transforming identified needs into performance based standards using objective criteria relative to the operation and implementation of blood management programs.
“The Center for Blood Conservation provides quality medical and surgical care without the use of donor blood, using specialized techniques to minimize a patient’s blood loss before, during and after surgery,” said Mark Eldredge, manager of the Center for Blood Conservation at Creighton University Medical Center.
The program was established in the early 90’s to meet the needs of patients who request non-blood medical procedures for religious reasons. The medical and surgical procedures are now available to all patients who wish to avoid using donated blood.
According to the ABC’s website, Creighton University Medical Center is one of only 12 accredited programs in the United States. “We are proud to offer the only accredited blood conservation program in the Omaha area,” said Gary Honts, President and CEO of Creighton University Medical Center. “Our program offers a safe alternative for those looking for surgical intervention procedures without the using blood.”
