Four years ago Harley Batie, a retired dentist who lives in Lincoln, had what he thought was just a bump on his head that wouldn’t go away.

“I had the bump for three or four months and thought it wasn’t going away because I kept knocking it anytime I got in and out of the car,” says Harley.

The rest of his family, especially his wife and daughter, pushed him to finally have it checked out. He had an oncologist in Lincoln take a biopsy and the results warranted it be checked further.

Harley’s daughter Ann is a friend of Dr. Dobleman and insisted her father see Dr. Dobleman who diagnosed Harley with fifth stage malignant melanoma – skin cancer.

“Dr. Dobleman gave me the news straight and answered all my questions, including that the location of the cancer did not automatically mean any of the brain tissue was involved,” explains Harley. “I had all the confidence in the world in him and wouldn’t have wanted anyone else,” adds Harley.

Dr. Dobleman was able to remove the cancer with very minimal scarring and then Harley worked with Dr. Gamini Soori on his interferon treatments.

“Those interferon treatments were the worst thing I ever experienced, only about 30% of patients make it through the whole treatment regimen,” notes Harley. “But Dr. Soori was there every step of the way – I got to feel like he was a part of the family,” says Harley.

With the help of the doctors and his family, Harley made through all his interferon treatments and looks forward to celebrating his 57th wedding anniversary with his wife Mary.
