When You Are Expecting FAQ's

Frequently Asked Obstetrics Questions

Q:  Is it safe to eat or drink foods with artificial sweeteners?

A: Yes

Q:  How much can I exercise?

A: If you exercised regularly before getting pregnant, it is safe to continue a low impact exercise regimen.  After the first trimester avoid laying flat on your back for abs work and certain yoga positions.

Q:  What should I do for a cold?

A: Over the counter medications such as pseudoephedrine and dextromethorphan are safe and usually enough to alleviate symptoms.

Q:  May I be in a house if the interior is being painted?

A: Yes, as long as there is adequate ventilation through the area being painted.

Q:  What can I take for heartburn?

A: OTC meds such as TUMS are ideal. If symptoms persist despite using OTC meds talk with your doctor for a prescription strength medication.

Q:  May I travel?

A: Yes, as long as the pregnancy remains uncomplicated.  I is usually ideal to restrict travel after 34-36 weeks as this is getting close to the delivery date.

Q:  What do I do for hemorrhoids?

A: OTC meds such as Tucks or preparation H are the first line.  You may need a prescription strength suppository if you have internal hemorrhoids.

Q:  May I take any medication for a headache?

A: We recommend Tylenol, regular or extra-strength as first line.  If this doesn’t work talk with your doctor as headaches can be a warning sign of high blood pressure in pregnancy.

Q:  Are dental x-rays & Novocain OK?

A: Yes, it is better to have good dental health than put off dental visits.

Q:  May I use a tanning booth?

A: Tanning booths are not recommended in general because you are exposed to the same UV rays as sunlight.  During pregnancy prolonged use of a tanning bed may cause increased temperature in the uterus.

Q:  May I use a hot tub?

A: No, it will increase the temperature of the fetus too much, which has been associated with birth defects.

Q:  What symptoms should I report to my doctor?

A: Persistent cramping, vaginal bleeding, persistent watery discharge, changes in fetal movement, persistent nausea/vomiting and any other symptom you may be concerned about.

Q:  What can I do about constipation?

A: Increased fluids and fiber, OTC solace or Milk of Magnesia as needed

Q:  Can anything be done to stop morning sickness?

A: There are several options to help control and manage symptoms.  Vitamin B6 and ginger tea/ginger lollipops are good OTC options.  There are several prescription options as well.  It is important to eat small frequent meals and avoid anything spicy or greasy.
