Familial Barrett Esophagus and Esophageal Adenocarcinoma StudyThe staff at the Esophageal Center at Creighton University is contacting patients previously diagnosed with esophageal adenocarcinoma and/or Barrett’s esophagus. Barrett’s esophagus is a precancerous condition of the esophagus (the tube that carries food into the stomach). We believe that some patients with the above mentioned diseases may have a familial tendency to develop Barrett’s esophagus, which may evolve into esophageal cancer. We are attempting to find out if certain families are more likely to get Barrett’s esophagus than other families. With this in mind, we are undertaking a study at the Esophageal Center to evaluate the risk factors and, hence hope to identify families at increase risk of developing esophageal cancer. This research is being done in collaboration with several other universities including Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and John Hopkins and The National Institute of Health. Participation in this study is completely voluntary and all study investigation will be provided at no cost.
