da Vinci® Minimally Invasive Hysterectomy
Less pain and scarring. Faster recovery.
If your doctor has told you that you need a hysterectomy as a treatment for fibroids, endometriosis or other gynecologic condition, you should know that there is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open surgery, known as the da Vinci hysterectomy.
The da Vinci hysterectomy is performed by an OB/GYN using a state-of-the-art da Vinci “robot,” which allows him or her to perform delicate surgical procedures through tiny ports in the abdomen instead of through a large incision.
Depending on the situation, this approach typically results in:
-
Significantly less pain
-
Less scarring
-
Shorter hospital stay
-
Minimal blood loss
-
Less risk of infection
-
Faster recover

Traditionally, abdominal hysterectomies are performed with open surgery, which requires a wide incision below the navel. This procedure can be painful, involving heavy pain medications, risk of infection and significant blood loss. After surgery, a long recovery (often 6 weeks) is necessary. In addition, many patients are not happy with the scar left by the incision. Da Vinci technology allows your doctor to perform the procedure through just a few tiny openings. As a result, you may be able to get back to life faster without the
usual recovery following major surgery.
Precision Surgery
Powered by advanced technology, the da Vinci Surgical System allows your doctor’s hand movements to be scaled and translated into the precise movements of tiny robotic instruments that perform the procedure. This results in an intuitive interface that has demonstrated advanced surgical capabilities. Though the system is often referred to as a robot or robotic, it does not ever operate on its own. To date there have been hundreds of thousands of successful da Vinci procedures.
While hysterectomy is a relatively safe procedure, as with any surgery, it may not be appropriate or necessary for all individuals or conditions. Ask your doctor to explain all treatment options and their risks and benefits.
